World’s Largest Beaver Dam!

Gnaw on this. Satellite images from space identify the largest beaver dam in the world. At 850 metres (2,800 feet) long, it’s almost twice the length of the CN Tower. Dam!
The beaver dam was discovered in the southern portion of Wood Buffalo National Park, which is the 2nd largest protected area in the world at 44,807 square kilometers, home of the largest land mammal native to North America–the Wood Bison, the birthplace of the largest bird native to North America–the Whooping Crane and, in addition, has one of the largest fresh water inland deltas in the world–The Peace Athabasca Delta. It only seems appropriate in this park of superlatives that the World’s largest beaver dam would be discovered here.

According to the experts, the average beaver cuts down an average of 200 trees a year and constructs dams that are 10 to 100 meters long. This begs the question: “So, what type of monstrous beaver could have built this dam?”
Actually, according to researchers, it’s been in construction since the mid-1970s by numerous generations of beavers. And it’s only going to get bigger!
To meet demand, Parks Canada is providing images a new, never-before-seen video clips of this interesting and massive natural feature on the Parks Canada website at www.parkscanada.gc.ca. And check out this full CBC report.
