The new Primus ExpressSpider is a sturdy alternative to top-mounted canister stoves.

I recently had the opportunity to use the new Primus Express Spider on a recent weekend outting.

For those who haven't heard much about Primus stoves they are typically known for producing quality top mounted canister stoves and have been quite popular in mountaineering and hiking circles.

The Express Spider is a top mounted Primus style burner with collapsable legs and a stainless steel braided hose attached.

Primus boasts that it is the lightest hose-mounted canister stove on the market.

With all the conveniences of a canister stove such pump-free operation and limited burner foul up due to clean burning compressed gas canisters the stove also benefits from the added sturdiness of fold out legs not normally found on canister stoves.

Boiling time for a litre of water in average weather conditions was roughly around four and half minutes. Not too shabby for such a little stove.

My first impression of this stove was that it was tiny.

With a packed weight of 198-grams it is tiny but performs the same or better than much larger stoves and works well for groups of 1-4 people.

Heat control is average as with all camp stoves and anyone with pack stove experience will find it quite capable of all your backcountry cooking needs and cranks out 7150 BTUs at full power.
