In the wilderness, help often doesn’t arrive for several hours or even days so its important that you pack a well-stocked first aid kit to deal with the bumps, bruises, blisters or even more serious injuries that can occur on trip.
Armed with a comprehensive first aid kit and a wilderness first course, you’re well on your way to being prepared for any emergency, from cuts to burns.
Check out your wilderness first aid kit and compare it with the list below. Depending on the length of the trip, the region and your personal medical history, you may want to include a more items. Check with your medical physician to see what special medications you may need to have stocked in your first aid kit.
Wilderness Canoe Trip First Aid Kit
- Medical Latex Gloves
- Triangular Bandages
- Sam Splints
- 3-inch Elastic Bandage
- Scissors
- Thermometer
- Tweezers
- Sterile Gauze Pads
- Medical Tape
- Band-Aids (various sizes and shapes)
- Mole Skin (for blisters)
- Iodine or another antiseptic cleaning solution
- Antibiotic ointment
- Spenco Second Skin (For burns)
- Calamine Lotion
- Aloe Vera Gel
- Tiger Balm or muscle rub
- Vaseline
- Rehydration salts
- Eye/Ear Antibiotic ointment
- Tylenol or Aspirin
- Ibuprofen
- Antihistamine
- Laxative
- Anti-diareah medication
- Antacid (Rolaids, tums)
- Epi-pen (for severe allergic reactions)
- Snack bite kit (depending on region)
- Ice Pack (push to activiate type)
- First Aid Manual
- Other personal medications
- Medical numbers (your physicians name and number, name and number of the closest hospital or clinic)
