HCC Boatworx has just constructed their first Maitland River canoe in Kevlar, which has “unbelievable stability and tracks like a dream.” James Gjesing and his staff have been developing cedar strip and fiberglass canoes for years, but have noticed a shift towards Kevlar canoes.
“We started two and a half years ago researching, developing and testing Kevlar and incorporating it into many of our own models,” says Gjesing. And it seems to be paying off. According to Gjesing, demand has increased for Kevlar over fiberglass. Part of the reason is that they offer a good price point. HCC boatworx Kevlar canoes are only 200 dollars more than their fiberglass counterparts and weigh considerably less.
The 16-foot 6-inch Maitland River Kevlar is great river tripping canoe and according to Gjesing, will be in production in the next week or two. The Maitland River retails for $1,599 (Kevlar) and $1,399 (fiberglass).
