The Gull River Open Canoe Race is now organized by Mark Scriver and his family and put together by a band of dedicated volunteers responsible for course design, judging, scoring, and results.

“I just make a few phone calls and the race pretty much runs itself,” joked Scriver during the award ceremony. Someone from the crowd told him to stop being so modest. A large round of applause followed. Scriver placed 1st in Men’s Masters, 3rd in Men’s Solo, 1st with Paul Mason in Men’s Tandem and 2nd with Wendy Grater in Mixed Tandem.

Race co-founder Wendy Grater of Black Feather was onsite to race and say a few words about the longevity of the race and just how far the sport of open canoe slalom has come since the early days of inner tubes for floatation.

This year a new class was introduced, LegendsMen’s Masters and Women’s Masters is for paddlers 40 and older, and Legends is now for paddlers 55 and older. And with a 30-year race history, there were plenty of Legends screaming down the river.

The Reel Paddling Film Festival was hosted Saturday evening by RPFF producer and Rapid Media publisher Scott MacGregor. MacGregor was also there to race, placing second with Brian Shields in Men’s Tandem, third in Mixed Tandem with Fionna Hough, third with five-year-old Dougie MacGregor in Junior/Senior Tandem and fifth inMen’s Solo.

Some said at the event the Gull River Open Canoe Race has been an annual tradition, like an open boaters’ Thanksgiving. And so for another year we gathered to play, race, eat and give thanks to the pioneers of the sport who’ve whacked their way through slalom gates before us.
