Verlen Kruger Memorial

In the world of canoeing there have been a number of influential figures whose contributions have created better conditions for us all. Now, six years after one of the legends of canoeing died, a group of dedicated individuals have come together to honour this inspiring individual.

In 1963, at the age of 41, Verlen Kruger was introduced to the sport of canoeing. Soon after his first trip he realized that there was an entire new world awaiting his exploration. Over the next 40 years he would race canoes, design and build canoes, and travel over 100,000 miles by canoe. Kruger's records and distances are amazing and will most likely stand for many years to come. The true essence of what Kruger's canoeing was all about was in the adventure and personal exploration he found on the vast and endless waterways right here within our own reach.

Kruger always helped others find adventure and personal exploration. He made available his canoes for all, guided many to find their own way into the wilderness and taught an efficient, comfortable new way to travel.

The Verlen Kruger Memorial was set up soon after Kruger's passing in 2004. Their initial goal is to have a bronze statue sculpted and placed next to his beloved Grand River in the town of Portland, Michigan. The statue is now complete and awaiting placement upon the prepared grounds. The Verlen Kruger Memorial will be dedicated to the future generations and the health and wellness of all waterways.

The Verlen Kruger Memorial continues to hold paddling events like the Ultimate Kruger Challenge in support of the memorial fund and continued awareness of Kruger’s message.
