Spending a lot of time in the wilderness as a child has made me the person I am today. I have been canoeing for about 35 years, exploring many place's. Photography was a natural offshoot from my love of nature, a way to bring it home with me and share with other why I love it. Now with a family I try to help them appreciate nature in the same way.
Canoeing is one of the best ways to explore our natural world

Jim Davis created a new topic Solar power for tripping in the wilderness in the forums.I finally got myself set up with solar power for charging all my camera, video, gps and flashlight batteries etc. The key was finding a charger that will charge all battery types reliably without damaging them. I found even different Lithium ion batteries from different manufacturers would not charge even though the specs are the same.
Curious if anyone else out there is set up with solar power for charging NiMH and Lithium batteries.
Thanks
Jim

Jim Davis replied to the topic Re:GPS for Canoeing in the forums.I bought the Garmin Oregon 550 a few weeks ago, very easy to use with a lot of options, so far so good, has a camera that I will use for geo-tagging photo's of specific locations for reference later. you can load all the types of map you want and has 3D view showing land contours.
it is expensive but deals can be had, I bought mine with Topo Canada map as well there are free maps online which can be layered together.

Jim Davis replied to the topic Re:Worst Portage EVER! in the forums. For me the one that comes to mind was in Wabakimi, can't remember what lakes it linked but is was after a winter of heavy snow and high winds. There were so many blow downs it was like navigating through giant match sticks... under, over and around the downed tree's. The repeated setting the canoe and packs down to make it up and over/under trees took it's toll.
Making matters worse was the heat during the trip, baking on the lake then trudging through the forest with bugs and such. My friend and I are photographers and had about 50+ lbs of equipment each, which ruled out single trip portages. I remember the body heat build up during the portage's, our heads felt like they were close to boiling.
But I have to say I am always up for the challenge and it generally adds to the trip even if I don't realize it until the trip is over.
Much easier portage in Algonquin

Jim Davis replied to the topic Re:Canoe Color in the forums. For me red is the choice, I have 2 red and one is skin coat Kevlar.
My preference for red is I like the color and feel it photograph's best, especially in cedar/canvas
