Video: Canadian Canoeing

Canadian Style canoeing, previously known as canoe ballet or freestyle. I stumbled across this video by Rolf and Debra Kraiker giving a little insight into the art of Canadian Style paddling. An amazing amount of boat control can be obtained from subtle strokes. Check out the video.

If you haven't you should give Canadian Style paddling a try. As a whitewater paddler who has taken a Canadian style course I can attest to it improving my moving water skill.

Launch Site

Easy as 123, sometimes. Getting into a canoe and launching can be a bit of a challenge at times and on occassion can result in an embarassing swim. Check out this video by Algonquin Oufitters displaying proper entry and launching of a tandem canoe from shore.

Think knot tying is only for Scouts? Think again. A canoeist will tie an average of 20 knots throughout the course of a weekend canoe trip—and many more for a two-week expedition. Just consider all that needs to be tied—canoes to your vehicle, tarps to trees and painters (end lines) to your canoe.

Overall, there are 8 essential knots that every tripper should know how to tie. The first essential one is known as the “king of knots”—the bowline.
