On canoe trips, while passing through the reedy-grasses next to shallow and sandy shorelines of inland lakes in Northern Ontario, I’ve often been surprised to discover patches of the wild rice grass. It seems to me, that wild rice would make a perfect edition to the evening’s dinner and would taste delicious alongside a freshly caught walleye or rainbow trout.
But how is wild rice collected? Well, this short video has some good tips on how to collect it yourself and it might just make for an interesting activity on your next late summer or early fall canoe trip, or perhaps it might add some excitement to a wind-bound day.
How to cook wild rice:
Ingredients:
1 cup wild rice
4 cups cold water
1tsp salt
Directions:
Combine all three ingredients together and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer over low heat for 50 minutes. Once cooked, drain any excess water, let cool and fluff with fork. Serves 6 side dishes.
