Mighty Miss Press, a Minneapolis based publishing company, announced this week the introduction of MIGHTY MISS, a memoir of unimaginable danger and delight, written by author and veteran canoe instructor and guide Gary Hoffman.

It is a memoir about the author’s pursuit of his passion of outdoor adventure and the courage to challenge boundaries of the routine of everyday life, his risk-taking that allows him to embrace the freedom that life is meant to offer.
When MIGHTY MISS is not exposing the river’s danger through six near death experiences, the book moves smoothly between the excitement of survival, moments of tranquil beauty, and father/son tensions. Hoffman brings all his storytelling talent to this moving, exquisitely written, and of course, danger-filled memoir.
An enthusiastic storyteller, Gary has been guiding canoe trips as a Boy Scout executive, a Minnesota and Quetico Boundary Waters and Lake of the Woods guide, and a Minnesota Outward Bound instructor for over 45 years. Since 2007, he has devoted his time to a full-time writing career. The book’s sales since November place it in the top 25% of books sold in 2009.
Noted educator, Arctic Explorer and book endorser Will Steger says, “MIGHTY MISS is more that just another canoe expedition. It is a roller coaster of emotions from seduction by profound natural beauty to numerous near-death experiences. At times terrifying, it is a must read for anyone preparing a Mississippi expedition.” Hoffman and Steger guided together in the ‘70s.
About his memoir, Hoffman said, “after living to tell about several near-death experiences, I decided to write about it. We encountered everything from being dropped into a forty-foot whirlpool on the down side of a wing dam, to games of chicken with 33,000-ton towboats. Our faith in each other and our father/son relationship was tested to the max.”
